About my DofE journey

2–3 minutes

This is a website to document my DofE journey. I will use it to weekly complete my skill of adapting a website, I will also use it to document my volunteering and physical sections of bronze DofE!

This is a table of how close I am to completing my goals:

This week I did my DofE session and we were learning about first aid. We learnt how to:

We are having a test on it next session

This week we were learning how to navigate with compasses and paces. It was quite tricky but I am learning how to do it slowly.

Compasses

We learnt how to use a compass to go in one direction. You turn the housing dial on the compass until the number of degrees lines up with the index pointer. Then you rotate the compass and your body until the red needle sits inside the red orienting arrow on the compass. Then follow the direction-of-travel arrow on the compass baseplate to your location.

Paces

We worked out our own personal pace count by walking 100m and counting how many times your left foot hits the ground. Mine was 60 and it is normally between 55-57. You then use this to work out how many paces you will take for different distances. For example I would know that to do 50m I would have to do 30 paces.

We combined these skills and did a treasure hunt where we were given the distance and the bearings and had to find and record what we found. In 2 weeks we are doing a navigation walk so these will be vital to do that.

My bronze DofE timeline until my final walk:

  • 20/04/26-We have a tent check where we will have to put up our tents and they will be inspected

  • 27/04/26-We have to bring in all of our kit and distribute it between the group

  • 08/05/26-Our DofE practice walk for 2 days

  • 05/06/26-Our final expedition!
